Fun Spot America in Fayetteville, Georgia is closing its doors August 2nd for good and I have to be honest this one kind of shocked me.
Now, I know it has been called Fun Spot America Atlanta for a while, but for some of us older folks, it will always be Dixieland. That was the name many of us grew up with. Before the big name change, before the new rides, and before it became part of the Fun Spot brand, it was simply Dixieland Fun Park.
And growing up, that was our “fun spot” pun intended LOL
Dixieland opened back in 1990. For a lot of families on the south side of Atlanta, it was one of those places you knew about. You did not have to drive all the way to a giant theme park like Six Flags to have a good time. It was right there in Fayetteville. It had go karts, games, family rides, and that local feel that made it special.
It may not have been Disney World. It may not have been Six Flags. But that was part of its charm. It felt close to home. It felt simple. It felt like the kind of place where kids could laugh, families could spend the day, and memories could be made without turning it into a full vacation.
Over the years, the park changed. Dixieland Fun Park later became Fun Junction USA. Then in 2017, Fun Spot America bought the park, and the name changed again to Fun Spot America Atlanta. With that came new attention, new rides, and a bigger push to make the park feel more like a true theme park.
One of the biggest additions was ArieForce One, the large roller coaster that brought coaster fans from all over to Fayetteville. For a moment, it felt like the park was stepping into a new chapter. It was not just the old local park anymore. It was becoming something bigger.
That is why this closing feels so surprising.
When you hear that a place like this is shutting down after 36 years, it was hsocking. This was not just a business on the side of the road. It was part of the community. It was part of childhood for a lot of people. It was part of school breaks, weekends, birthday trips, summer nights, and family time.
Sometimes we do not realize how much a place means until we hear it is going away.
For me, this closure feels like another reminder that time keeps moving. Places we grew up with do not always stay around forever. The names change. The buildings change. The rides change. And sometimes, even the places that seemed like they would always be there eventually close their gates.
I do not know the full reason behind the closing, and I do not want to act like I do. But I do know this… Fun Spot, Dixieland, Fun Junction whatever name you remember it by gave a lot of people memories.
It gave Fayetteville something fun. It gave families a place to go. It gave kids a reason to get excited when they saw those rides from the road.
Thank you for the fun. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for being our local getaway before everything became so expensive and complicated.
