Sometime you come across a show that surprises you. That’s exactly how I felt after watching Wonka’s The Golden Ticket on Netflix. I recently finished the entire first season, and I have to say, I enjoyed it more than I expected. From the amazing production to the competition itself I found the whole experience pretty interesting.
Now before anybody gets too excited, I’m not saying this is the greatest reality show ever made. There were a few things I didn’t care for. However, I do think this show deserves a little more credit than it’s getting.
A Little Background on Wonka
If you grew up watching Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, you probably remember the chocolate river, the Oompa Loompas, and those famous Golden Tickets.
The story originally came from Roald Dahl’s 1964 book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It later became the popular 1971 movie starring Gene Wilder. Over the years, we’ve seen other versions, including Johnny Depp’s 2005 film and Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka in 2023.
Netflix decided to take things in a different direction.
In September 2026, Netflix released Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, a nine episode reality competition series. The show brings 12 Golden Ticket winners and their chosen partners into a chocolate factory filled with challenges, surprises, and a life changing cash prize.
Instead of watching a fictional story, we’re watching real people compete inside Wonka’s world which I thought was awesome
The Production Really Surprised Me
One of the biggest things that caught my attention was the production.
Seriously, the amount of work that went into creating this chocolate factory was impressive. From the colorful rooms to the special effects and creative challenges, you could tell a lot of thought went into making everything feel magical.
I found myself wondering how they managed to put everything together.
If you’re someone who enjoys Disney style attractions, fantasy, or magical settings, I think you’ll appreciate the look of this show.
The Contestants Made It Interesting
Another thing I enjoyed was the casting.
I thought the producers selected a good group of people. We learned about their backgrounds, personal struggles, and reasons for wanting to win. That helped me connect with some of the contestants.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the pairing system, though. I understand why the producers wanted contestants working together, but personally I think the competition could have been more interesting without it.
As the season continued, the mood started changing. What began as a fun adventure inside a chocolate factory slowly became a serious competition for money.
By the middle and end of the season, you could feel that shift. Emotions were running high, decisions became harder, and winning started to mean much more.
I actually liked that part.
Why Are the Reviews So Bad?
Here’s what surprised me. Despite how much I enjoyed the show, the reviews haven’t been great.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season an 11% critics score, while the audience score was around 37%.
I can understand some of the complaints. A few moments felt overdone, and certain parts seemed a little forced.
But I also wonder whether some viewers expected a traditional Wonka story instead of a reality competition.
For me, the reality show format was part of what made it enjoyable. The more I watched, the more interested I became.
My Final Thoughts: Is Wonka Worth Watching?
I’d give Wonka’s The Golden Ticket somewhere between 3.5 and 4 out of 5 stars.
It’s not perfect, but I enjoyed the creativity, the competition, and the emotions that developed throughout the season. It even made me more interested in exploring other reality competition shows.
If you’re looking for something different, especially if you enjoy magical settings mixed with competitive reality TV, I’d recommend giving it a chance.
You can watch all nine episodes of Wonka’s The Golden Ticket on Netflix.
