I recently had the chance to attend a recruit graduation for the Clayton County Fire Department something I hadn’t done in probably a good decade. As someone who’s been in the department for 12 years now, walking back into that setting brought back a lot of memories. It reminded me of my own graduation standing in that same church feeling those same butterflies.

Seeing the new recruits and their families smiling and celebrating was a breath of fresh air. This class went through an intense 12 month program that combined both fire and EMT training, something that’s never really been done in our department before. It’s a huge commitment, and watching them come out on the other side was genuinely inspiring.

For any new firefighter reading this, here’s my advice.. be the first to tackle the little things. I’m not talking about being the first to climb a roof or rush into a fire. I mean be the first to do the small stuff… show up early, do your check offs, tidy up the station, learn those reports, and be consistent. These small habits build trust and shows your crew that you can be relied on. It’s those little things that add up to big things.

And to the families and friends of these new firefighters… your support is everything. The first year is going to be tough. There will be missed holidays, long shifts, and moments when they come home looking at the world a little differently. Be patient with them, check in on them, and be their rock. It’s a huge adjustment period, and having a strong support system makes all the difference.

In the end, this graduation reminded me why I joined the Clayton County fire department and why those little acts of dedication matter so much. Welcome to the new recruits, and here’s to a strong start on your journey.

Stay Safe out there
