The other day, I took my son to McDonald’s for lunch. We sat down shared some fries and just talked for a bit. It felt like a simple moment…..but it hit me with a wave of memories from my own childhood. Back then (damn I sound old!!) going to McDonald’s wasn’t just about grabbing a quick bite it was an experience. You’d run straight to the playground after eating climb through those colorful tunnels, race down the slide, and make new friends before your parents even finished their food.
But this time something was missing. The food was the same, the golden arches were still shining, but the playground that magic part of McDonald’s was gone. Just a few tables, bright lights, and a quiet dining room. And it made me think, where did all the McDonald’s and Burger King playgrounds go?
When I was growing up, those playgrounds were everywhere. They brought families together. Parents could enjoy a meal while the kids burned off some energy. It wasn’t fancy, but it worked. You didn’t need an iPad or a phone to have fun just a few slides, a ball pit, and your imagination.
So why did they disappear? I did some research and well…. A few reasons really. For one safety rules and lawsuits started tightening things up. Many of the old metal slides and climbing tunnels didn’t meet today’s safety standards. Then came the rise of drive thrus and delivery apps. People started eating on the go instead of sitting down. Restaurants focused more on speed than family time. Plus, during the pandemic indoor play areas were shut down for health reasons and some never reopened which sucks
It’s a shame because those playgrounds were more than just play spaces. They were little communities. Kids learned to share, take turns, and make friends. Parents got a short break while still keeping an eye on their kids. And for families like mine, it created memories that lasted a lifetime.
I get that times change. Technology moves forward and companies adapt to what’s popular. But not everything old needs to fade away. Sometimes the simple things like a playground next to your Happy Meal are what make life special.
If you ask me, fast food places should bring back those playgrounds, maybe with a modern twist. Make them safe, clean, and fun again. They don’t have to be huge or fancy just a place where kids can be kids, and parents can enjoy a few quiet minutes without screens.
When I looked at my son that day, I couldn’t help but feel like he missed out on something I got to enjoy growing up. It’s not just about nostalgia it’s about connection. Families need more moments like that.
So next time a fast food company talks about “revamping their brand,” I hope they think about what really brought people in the door…not just logo changes. It wasn’t just the fries or the toys it was the laughter echoing from the playground. And I think it’s time we brought that back.
