If you’ve shopped online lately, you might’ve noticed something strange. That $5 shirt on Shein now costs $10. The cheap gadgets on Temu? Also creeping up in price. You’re not imagining it. Prices are rising and fast.

The reason? Tariffs.

A tariff is a tax placed on goods brought into the U.S. from other countries. In this case, most of the products sold on sites like Shein and Temu come from China. For years, many of these low cost items were able to skip the tariffs because of a rule that said packages under $800 wouldn’t be taxed. That rule helped companies keep prices super low.

But now that rule has changed. That same package under $800 is no longer free from fees. The U.S. government wants to make things more fair for American businesses that compete with these low cost sellers. So, Shein and Temu are now being taxed for many of the items they ship into the country. And as a result, they’re passing those extra costs on to us the customers.

Shein, known for its fast fashion, has raised prices on many of its popular clothing items. Temu, which sells everything from home tools to electronics, has also adjusted its pricing and even started shipping more from warehouses inside the U.S. to cut down on those extra taxes.

Even though these changes might be good for protecting local jobs and small businesses, shoppers are feeling the pinch. Americans have leaned on affordable sites like Shein and Temu during tough financial times. With inflation, high rent, and rising food costs, many people are doing their best to stretch every dollar. These price hikes, even small ones, can add up quickly for families on a tight budget.

Now more than ever, businesses need to be smart about how they raise prices. Americans remember when former President Trump called out companies like Walmart for pushing costs onto shoppers. He said large retailers should take some of the hit instead of making regular people pay more. Whether you agree with him or not, that message sticks. It reminds us that companies have a choice in how they treat customers during tough times.

Still, the bigger issue is uncertainty. With the economy shifting, new rules being made, and no clear end in sight, many people are wondering how long they’ll be able to afford basic goods. Online shopping used to be the cheap and easy way to get what you needed. Now it feels less certain.

This doesn’t mean people will stop shopping online. It just means we have to be more careful look for sales, use coupons, and compare prices before buying. The good news? Affordable deals are still out there. They just take a little more work to find.

So yes Shein and Temu are getting more expensive. But that’s the result of a changing world, not a simple price change. As shoppers, it’s up to us to stay informed and adjust. And as businesses raise their prices, we hope they remember who helped them grow in the first place: the everyday people looking for a good deal.
