I’ve been hesitant to talk about ICE Immigration and Customs Enforcement but it’s a topic we can’t avoid anymore. Established back in 2003, ICE originally flew under the radar. Now, it’s front page news, and trust me, I get why people are uneasy.
ICE’s job is enforcing immigration laws and tackling serious cross border crimes. On one hand, I do believe any country needs some form of protection. There are folks who mean harm, and it’s rational to want to keep the country safe. But here’s the flip side…. when families get separated or non threatening folks get swept into the system, we all feel that’s not how it should be.
The big uproar, in my eyes, comes from how much it’s been spotlighted. Under President Trump’s administration, ICE became a household name. Now, everyone’s got an opinion. Protests, media coverage it all paints ICE as the villain. And maybe that’s the problem…. it’s been pushed too far. It’s not a brand new agency…… it’s been here. But now it’s on trial in the court of public opinion.
I think ICE needs a reset. It has its place, but we can’t let it go unchecked. Listen to people. When we’re seeing images of kids separated or hear stories of unfair targeting, it’s hard to stomach. We can be tough on criminals yes. But we can also find humane solutions for families who are just trying to build a better life. At the end of the day, we’re all human. We can protect our nation while still protecting our humanity.
ICE is a tough conversation, but I believe we can shift from fear to balance. It’s time to rethink, listen, and do better.
