So, today was just supposed to be a normal day off for me here in Henry County, Georgia. I had my usual morning routine and was getting ready to head out for a workout around the neighborhood. But as I stepped outside, I noticed something unusual, a group of people who turned out to be meteorite hunters!

Now, I’m not a meteorite expert by any means, my basic understanding is that it’s a big rock from outer space that can cause some serious damage if it hits the ground. Apparently, a meteorite recently came down in our area, and a piece of it even went through someone’s house!

I ended up chatting with a few of these meteorite hunters who had come from places like Arizona and Alabama. They were super enthusiastic and told me all about how valuable these meteorite fragments can be, some pieces can sell for anywhere from a hundred bucks to fifteen thousand dollars, depending on their size and composition. It was fascinating to learn that as a meteorite enters the atmosphere, it often breaks into smaller pieces that scatter like a shower of rocks before it lands.

Based on some research, meteorites are expensive because they’re rare, come from outer space, and are often billions of years old, making them valuable to scientists and collectors alike. A meteorite is a piece of rock or metal from space that survives its journey through Earth’s atmosphere and lands on the ground. It originally comes from an asteroid, comet, or sometimes even the Moon or Mars. Unlike meteors, which burn up in the sky meteorites actually make it to the Earth’s surface.

So, if you’re in Henry County and you see some folks wandering around looking at the ground, you might just have some meteorite hunters in the neighborhood. And who knows, maybe there’s a little piece of space rock waiting to be discovered right in your own backyard!
