Alright, I won’t bore you through a lot of text, but there are a few things you should know before applying to any Georgia fire department, especially the one I’m currently with, Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services.

Disqualifiers:

  • No felony convictions.
  • No significant driving infractions.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • Minimum age requirement is 18.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency is a must.
  • Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License required.

If you have any of the above issues, it’s advisable not to apply until you address them. Now, being a firefighter can be a fulfilling career, but it comes with challenges and experiences that the average person hasn’t encountered. Ensure you’re prepared for the unique demands of the job. I’m not trying to scare you, but it’s essential to be aware and not caught off guard. This is real life, not a TV show like Chicago Fire. Some have served for decades, while others have left the service all together.

Here are four straightforward steps to guide you in joining the Clayton County Fire Department. Keep in mind that the hiring process can be lengthy, ranging from 3 to 6 months, depending on vacancies.

First Step: Go to [Clayton County Fire Department Application]… Select “Fire” from the dropdown menu on the left, then click “search.” Look for “FIREFIGHTER RECRUIT.” If you don’t see it that means we are not hiring at the moment, check back in a month or two. Stay connected with me, and I’ll notify you as soon as I know.

Second Step: Assuming you find “FIREFIGHTER RECRUIT,” click “apply.” This will prompt you to create an account. Complete the application.

Third Step: After completing the application, follow up by calling our headquarters the next day at (770-473-7833). Explain that you’ve submitted an application and inquire if they’ve received it. They usually confirm, but if not, call again in a few days.

Fourth Step: The Clayton County Fire Department has been instrumental in my personal and financial growth. While I recommend it, I also suggest applying to more than one fire department. Stay in good shape, stay out of trouble, and be prepared for the call. If you’d like recommendations on other departments, connect with me.

Congratulations on applying! That’s a great start. You have a long road ahead but it can be fun. If you’re genuinely committed to joining this service, chances are you’ll get the call from a department. Prioritize physical fitness and mental resilience, as firefighting and being a EMT is physically demanding and mentally challenging.

Good luck!
