When the monks came through Clayton County during the Walk of Peace, I’ll be the first to admit something…..I had no clue what was going on. People were excited, respectful, and deeply moved. Social media was full of photos and praise. Meanwhile, I was sitting there thinking, Who are these monks, and why is this such a big deal?

So instead of staying clueless, I decided to do some research. I wanted to understand who monks are, what they stand for, and why events like the Walk of Peace matter so much to people. Here’s what I found.

What monks actually are

Monks are people who choose a life focused on spiritual growth, simplicity, and discipline. Most monks give up things many of us consider normal like material possessions, constant entertainment, and even certain personal freedoms to focus on inner peace and helping others.

Many of the monks involved in peace walks are Buddhist monks, though monks exist in other religions too. Buddhist monks follow teachings centered on compassion, mindfulness, and reducing suffering not just for themselves, but for everyone around them.

What monks do day to day

Before I looked into this, I thought monks just sat around meditating all day. That’s only part of it. Their daily lives are usually very structured and purposeful. Monks often:

  • Meditate and pray for hours a day
  • Study spiritual teachings
  • Practice mindfulness in everything they do
  • Live simply with very few personal belongings
  • Serve communities through teaching or peaceful outreach

Everything they do is intentional. Even walking can be a spiritual practice.

What the Walk of Peace is really about

The Walk of Peace isn’t a protest or a political statement. That surprised me. It’s a silent, mindful walk meant to spread messages of peace, compassion, and unity. The monks walk slowly and deliberately, often in silence, as a reminder to slow down in a world that feels nonstop and chaotic.

They’re not asking for money. They’re not pushing beliefs on anyone. They’re simply showing, through action, that peace starts with how we move, think, and treat others.

When I learned that, the public reaction made a lot more sense.

Why people respond so strongly to monks

In a time where everything feels loud…news, social media, politics, and daily stress the presence of monks feels calming. They represent something most of us are craving, even if we don’t realize it…..peace, balance, and purpose.

Watching monks walk quietly through a cities sends a powerful message without saying a word. It’s a reminder that slowing down isn’t weakness, it’s strength.

What I took away from it

I’ll be honest again before this, I probably would’ve walked right past them without understanding the meaning behind it. After doing the research, I get why people were so moved.

The monks weren’t there to impress anyone. They were there to remind us that peace isn’t something you post about it’s something you practice.
