For a moment, everyone in McDonough, Georgia, was buzzing with excitement over the idea of a Buc-ee’s coming to town. As someone who loves a good road trip and the iconic Buc-ee’s brisket sandwich and their COOKIES, I was thrilled!!! But here’s the kicker……….it was all an April Fools’ joke! Yeah, that one stung.
McDonough’s April Fools’ Prank
On April 1, people genuinely believed that a new Buc-ee’s would soon pop up in McDonough where I currently stay. Given how popular the chain is, many…including myself, got hyped. Buc-ee’s, known for its spotless bathrooms, walls of snacks, and giant gas stations, seemed like the perfect addition to the town. But, alas, it was just a prank meant to have a little fun at our expense
A New Hope: Monroe County Location in the Works
The good news is that Buc-ee’s expansion into Georgia is very real, just not in McDonough (yet). Buc-ee’s is officially working on a new location in Monroe County, near the Rumble Road exit off I-75. If everything goes smoothly with zoning and planning approvals, construction could start soon, taking about 15 months to complete. This new site is expected to offer 120 gas pumps, 74,000 square feet of retail space, and attract about 100,000 visitors per week
The new store will also bring some major benefits to the local economy. Buc-ee’s promises to create around 200 jobs with wages ranging from $18 to $20 per hour, plus health insurance, paid vacation, and 401(k) options. It’s exciting to see a business not only bring great food and clean bathrooms but also offer competitive employment in the community
Georgia’s Buc-ee’s Boom
This Monroe County store will be Georgia’s fourth location, joining the ranks of those in Warner Robins, Adairsville, and Calhoun. Another is scheduled to open in Brunswick by June 2025. Buc-ee’s seems to have a knack for choosing prime spots along busy highways, which is no surprise given its reputation as a road trip destination
Conclusion
While McDonough’s Buc-ee’s dream turned out to be just an April Fools’ gag, Monroe County residents might soon have something to celebrate. The real excitement lies in the promise of jobs, visitors, and, of course, Beaver Nuggets. For now, all we can do is wait for the planning commission’s decision and hope that Buc-ee’s continues its expansion across the state. Who knows? Maybe one day McDonough will get its own Buc-ee’s after all….til then ill be making that 20 minute drive to Monroe!
