Today, I’m a worried Falcons fan. I’m hurt, confused, and frustrated after watching how we played against the Steelers. The first game of the season usually sets the tone, but after today, I can’t find a single reason to be happy. If you know me, you know I’m the guy who always gives the benefit of the doubt. But listen, today we had every chance to win….yet we found a way to hand the game over, like we do every year. We were the better team, but somehow, we managed to lose, 18-10.

This was supposed to be a fresh start for us. A new coaching staff led by Raheem Morris, new key players like Kirk Cousins, and a sense of optimism for the season ahead. But instead, it felt all too familiar.

The worst part? Losing to a Steelers team that didn’t even have their starting quarterback, Russell Wilson. We lost to a backup QB, Justin Fields, and let our former head coach, Arthur Smith, now the Steelers’ offensive coordinator, walk out of Atlanta with a win!

Kirk Cousins’ Rough Debut

I had high hopes for Kirk Cousins, especially after we signed him to a four-year, $180 million deal. But let’s be honest, his performance was disappointing. Cousins completed just 16-of-26 passes for 155 yards, threw one touchdown, and gave up two costly interceptions. The second one, with less than three minutes left, felt like the final nail in the coffin….well it WAS

Sure, Cousins was up against a brutal pass rush from TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith, but after an offseason of hype, this is not how we expected his Falcons debut to go. His two interceptions killed any momentum we had, and Watt’s sack at the end sealed our fate.

Defense Holds, But Offense Fizzles

Our defense did their job, A.J. Terrell Jr. had his hands full with George Pickens, who made some big plays, but the defense kept us in the game. We just couldn’t capitalize offensively. Which is shocking to me

Bijan Robinson led the team with 68 rushing yards on 18 carries, but that’s just not good enough. We need our running game to step up and give Cousins some support. The Falcons backfield is way too talented to be held to under 100 yards.

Looking Ahead

I know it’s only Week 1, but I’m worried. This game was winnable, and yet we managed to let it slip away. We had the better team on the field today, but like every year, we found a way to lose. I hope to look back in a few weeks and say, “I overreacted.” But right now, I’m just frustrated as hell.

In the aftermath of a frustrating defeat, the Atlanta Falcons find themselves searching for answers after a lackluster performance against the Washington Commanders. The disappointment is palpable, not only among the fans but within the Falcons’ organization itself. It was, without a doubt, one of the sloppiest games we’ve witnessed from the Falcons this season, and it’s not just about Desmond Ridder, it’s about the entire team and the coaching staff.

The Falcons had been impressive in the fourth quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium this season, outscoring their opponents 41-7 in the final frame through their first three home games, all of which were victories. So, when they entered the fourth quarter trailing the Commanders 24-10, there was a glimmer of hope.

Desmond Ridder gave Falcons fans renewed hope when he connected with Jonnu Smith for a touchdown, narrowing the deficit to 24-16 with 12:38 remaining. The Falcons dominated in terms of yards gained, outgaining the Commanders 131 to 16, but they were unable to alter the score.

Things took a bizarre turn when Falcons coach Arthur Smith decided to attempt a two-point conversion after Smith’s touchdown. The decision left many scratching their heads, but the coach pointed to similar scenarios from last year’s games against the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Falcons’ defense managed to give the offense another opportunity, which was squandered in an unfortunate series of events. A delay of game penalty and an interception in the endzone ended a promising drive and dashed the Falcons’ hopes.

Despite the obstacles, the Falcons’ defense did its part to give the offense one final shot with just under two minutes remaining. The odds were stacked against them, but Desmond Ridder attempted to engineer a miraculous comeback.

However, confusion reigned during the critical moments of the game. The clock was mismanaged, and multiple errors in communication marred the final drive. The Falcons were unable to get organized, leading to a final interception that sealed their fate.

While it’s tempting to lay the blame on one person, Arthur Smith believes that these issues are indicative of an area in need of improvement. He acknowledged the logistical challenges that affected the game’s closing moments, noting that everyone must be better, whether it’s about substitutions, reads, or play calls.

Smith highlighted key moments when the Commanders capitalized on Atlanta’s mistakes, underscoring the importance of taking advantage of opportunities and field position in football. The Commanders managed to make the most of their chances despite being outgained in yardage, whereas the Falcons couldn’t capitalize on their advantages.

This disheartening loss leaves the Falcons at 3-3 for the season, still in the mix for a playoff berth. However, performances like this one may prove costly when January arrives.

In conclusion, the Falcons have some soul-searching to do after a disheartening loss. The issues run deeper than individual mistakes, and the team must work collectively to address operational errors and capitalize on opportunities. The question that lingers is whether the Falcons can bounce back after this setback and maintain their playoff aspirations. Only time will tell.
