At what point does the thrill become too much?

I’ve always understood why people love roller coasters. The speed, the height, the sudden drops, and that feeling of your stomach turning are all part of the experience. But after the recent tragedy at Six Flags Over Georgia I think we need to have a serious conversation about safety.

On October 12, 2026 Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem lost his life after being ejected from the Goliath roller coaster. Four other riders were injured. The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not determined exactly what went wrong.

This one hit close to home for me. I have friends who knew the victim, and I’ve personally ridden Goliath before. I also know plenty of people who have enjoyed that same ride.

It’s scary knowing this could have been any of us.

How Far Is Too Far?

Something I’ve been thinking about is how far we’re willing to push these rides.

We build a roller coaster that goes faster and higher. People love it. Then we build another that goes even faster, climbs higher, and drops harder.

But where is the tipping point?

I’m not saying we should stop building roller coasters. I understand people love the adrenaline. However, just because we can push the limits doesn’t always mean we should.

At some point, safety needs to matter more than creating the next biggest thrill.

Unfortunately, This Has Happened Before

What makes this tragedy even more concerning is that Six Flags has experienced similar incidents.

In 2004, Stanley Mordarsky died after being ejected from Superman Ride of Steel at Six Flags New England. Investigators found that he had not been properly secured.

In 2013, Rosa Esparza died after falling from the Texas Giant roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas. Following that tragedy, Six Flags added seat belts and made changes to the restraints.

Now in 2026, another family is dealing with an unimaginable loss.

Six Flags has announced plans to add seat belts to Goliath and other rides with similar restraints.

My question is simple… Why weren’t those extra safety measures already there?

I’m not claiming seat belts would have prevented this particular death. We don’t know that yet. But I believe every possible layer of protection should be considered before tragedy strikes.

We Put Our Lives in Their Hands

Several weeks before this tragedy, I visited a fair around Hampton, Georgia, with my son.

I noticed something I really respected. Some ride operators were willing to be flexible about tickets, but when it came to height requirements, they weren’t playing around.

If my son wasn’t tall enough, the answer was no. No exceptions.

I appreciated that because one small decision could make the difference between someone going home safely or not.

We often get on these rides without thinking twice. We trust that employees are trained, equipment is maintained, and everything has been checked.

We’re literally putting our lives in someone else’s hands.

That’s why even a simple human mistake can have devastating results.

Safety Should Never Be an Afterthought

I also have concerns about the legal waivers amusement parks use to limit liability. I understand there are risks with these rides, but accepting those risks shouldn’t mean companies escape responsibility if something goes wrong on their end.

To be fair, serious accidents like this are uncommon compared with the millions of rides people take. Many operators work hard to keep guests safe, and they deserve credit.

But uncommon doesn’t mean impossible.

As parents and visitors, we should pay attention to safety rules, height limits, restraints, and any concerns we have before riding.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kariem family.

I’m looking forward to the investigation’s findings because we still don’t have all the answers. I don’t want to blame an employee, the victim, or the equipment without knowing the facts.

What I do know is that someone went to an amusement park expecting a good time and never made it home.

In today’s world, with all our technology and safety systems, that’s incredibly hard to accept.

America is preparing to livestream an execution, and while some people see it as justice, I believe we need to think carefully about the message we’re sending.

There is a story making headlines across the country that has me feeling two different ways. Part of me understands why people would support it. But another part of me is asking, “What in the world are we doing?” I’m talking about the U.S. military’s plan to livestream the execution of a man responsible for killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas.

What Happened at Fort Hood?

On November 5, 2009, Nidal Malik Hasan, a former Army major and psychiatrist, opened fire at Fort Hood, killing 13 people and wounding 32 others. In 2013, he was sentenced to death for his crimes.

Now his execution is scheduled for December 3, 2026 by firing squad. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has supported making the execution available for public viewing. Supporters believe this could send a strong message about the consequences of committing such terrible crimes.

And that’s where I have a problem.

Justice Shouldn’t Become Entertainment

Look, I understand wanting justice. Thirteen people lost their lives. Families were destroyed, and survivors have carried that pain for years. If someone close to me had been killed, I can imagine feeling angry enough to support the harshest punishment possible.

But does that mean we should livestream someone being killed?

I can already picture people gathering around their phones, cheering, sharing clips, and treating someone’s death like a sporting event. That doesn’t sit right with me. There is a difference between holding someone accountable and turning punishment into entertainment.

America has done public executions before. In 1936 thousands gathered in Kentucky to watch Rainey Bethea’s hanging. That was about 90 years ago. We eventually moved away from those public events, and I believe there were good reasons for doing so.

Why would we want to go backward?

Will This Actually Stop Violence?

Some argue that broadcasting an execution might scare others into thinking twice before committing murder. I understand that argument, but I’m not convinced.

Think about the September 11 attacks. Those responsible were willing to die while killing innocent people. Do we really believe watching an execution would stop someone already prepared to sacrifice their own life?

We also need to talk about mental health. Not every violent crime is caused by mental illness, and most people living with mental illness are not violent. Still, recognizing warning signs, responding to crises, and making treatment easier to access deserve more attention.

I’d rather see us livestream conversations about mental health, violence prevention, and protecting our communities than someone’s final moments.

What Message Are We Sending Our Children?

We already live in a stressful world. Families are dealing with expensive groceries, high living costs, and concerns about safety. Do we really need another graphic event spreading across social media?

Even if platforms restrict the footage, children could eventually find it. Once something reaches the internet, controlling where it goes becomes difficult.

And what about the message we’re sending to the rest of the world? America has a painful history, and we’ve spent generations trying to learn from it. I don’t believe public executions represent progress.

My Final Thoughts……

Let me be clear. I’m not defending this man’s actions, and I’m not arguing that his sentence must be overturned. Serious crimes deserve serious punishment. I understand why some people believe the death penalty is justified.

But punishment doesn’t need an audience.

If the government carries out the sentence, that’s a separate debate. My concern is the livestream. I don’t believe it will make families safer, bring victims back, or solve the deeper problems behind violence.

Again….Justice should be about accountability, not entertainment. And sometimes, just because we can show something to the world doesn’t mean we should.

I never thought I would be writing a blog post about spiders. In fact, I really didn’t want to write this one because I hate spiders with a passion! But after what happened to me one morning, I had to figure out what was going on.

Apparently, Georgia has some new residents, and they don’t seem interested in paying rent!

I’m talking about the Joro spider, and if you live in Georgia, you’ve probably seen these things hanging around your yard, porch, or driveway.

My Morning Turned Into a Boxing Match

Picture this. It’s early in the morning, and I’m getting ready to leave for work and tis dark outside. Everything seems normal until I walk outside.

That’s when all hell breaks loose.

Spiderwebs were EVERYWHERE!

I’m talking about webs on every corner. As I walked toward my cars, I started running into them. Then I stepped between my vehicles, and that’s when the real fight began.

I got hit from one side, then the other. I was stumbling around, trying to get these webs off me. I felt like I was in a boxing match, except my opponent had eight legs and a serious home field advantage lol!

And trust me, I wasn’t laughing.

I didn’t know where the spiders were, what was crawling on me, or whether I was about to get bitten. All I knew was that I needed to get out of there!

Once I survived that morning adventure, I decided to do some research.

What Exactly Is a Joro Spider?

The Joro spider (Trichonephila clavata) is an invasive spider from East Asia, including Japan, China, and Korea.

It was first reported in Georgia around 2013 or 2014 and has since spread across parts of the southeastern United States.

Female Joro spiders can have leg spans of several inches. They have bright yellow, black, and blue markings, making them hard to miss.

And those massive golden colored webs? They’re surprisingly strong!

Why Are There So Many in Georgia?

Joro spiders have become common for several reasons.

  • They reproduce quickly. Females can lay hundreds of eggs in one egg sac.
  • They travel through the air. Young spiders release silk that helps them ride the wind, a process called ballooning.
  • Georgia’s climate suits them. They can handle cooler temperatures better than some other spiders.
  • They eat insects. Their webs catch flies, mosquitoes, and other flying bugs.

Scientists are still studying how they affect native wildlife.

Will Joro Spiders Disappear During Winter?

Here’s what I find interesting. It feels like these spiders are getting worse as the weather gets cooler!

But there’s an explanation.

Joro spiders grow throughout the summer and become much larger and easier to spot during the fall.

As freezing weather arrives, adult spiders typically die. However, their eggs survive the winter and hatch in spring.

So, unfortunately…this isn’t a permanent goodbye.

The Million Dollar Question….. Do Joro Spiders Bite?

YES! Joro spiders can bite humans!

And that was probably the most interesting thing I learned.

My stepdad always told me…. “If it can eat, it can bite.” I’ve believed that ever since.

Joro spiders are venomous, but their venom is not considered medically dangerous to most people. Their bites are rare because they usually avoid humans.

Their fangs may struggle to break human skin. If a bite happens, symptoms are generally mild, such as brief pain, redness, or swelling.

They’re not considered a serious threat like black widows or brown recluses.

Still, have you SEEN these things?

I don’t care how harmless scientists say they are. A giant spider hanging between my cars at five in the morning is enough to ruin my day!

Georgia, We Have a Spider Problem!

Maybe I’ve been living under a rock, but I don’t remember seeing these spiders growing up.

Now they’re everywhere!

I understand they help control insects, and I respect their place in nature. But I would appreciate it if they stayed out of my yard and driveway.

Until then, I’ll be checking every corner before leaving for work.

Because after that morning boxing match, I’m officially 0-1 against the Joro spiders lol!

You can call me old if you want, but I have always been a Judge Judy fan.

I’m 32 years old, and yes, I still watch reruns of Judge Judy. I don’t even have a great explanation for it. There is just something about that courtroom, her personality, and the way she handled people that made the show different.

And now, after about 30 years on television, Judge Judy Sheindlin is stepping away from being an on camera TV judge. Her current show, Judy Justice, is wrapping up in October 2026.

For longtime fans like me, that kind of sucks.

Judge Judy Never Felt Like Just a TV Show

There have been plenty of courtroom shows over the years. Some have been entertaining. Some have been funny. But a lot of them have always felt exactly like what they are…. television.

Judge Judy felt different.

When she walked into that courtroom, you felt like court was actually in session.

She was commanding. She was serious. She was funny without trying too hard. Most importantly, she had this ability to listen to someone’s long story and somehow cut straight through the nonsense.

Judge Judy Sheindlin was a real New York family court judge before becoming a TV star. The original Judge Judy premiered in 1996 and ran for 25 seasons before ending in 2021. She then moved on to Judy Justice.

Maybe that real courtroom experience is part of what made the show work.

It never felt like she was playing Judge Judy.

She WAS Judge Judy.

Believe It or Not, I Actually Learned Something

This might sound weird, but I honestly feel like I learned things from watching the show.

A lot of the cases came down to basic life lessons.

Keep your receipts. Read contracts before signing them. Don’t loan money you can’t afford to lose. Don’t make agreements without getting things in writing. And if you’re going to stand in front of a judge, you better have your story together.

Sometimes the cases were funny, but underneath the entertainment was a message about personal responsibility.

That is probably one reason I still watch it today.

The Gavel Is Staying in the Family

The good news is that Judy isn’t completely disappearing.

She has said she still plans to be creative and work on projects behind the scenes. She is also involved with her son Adam Levy’s courtroom show, Adam’s Law, which premiered in September 2026. Judy created the series and serves as an executive producer.

I’ll definitely give Adam’s Law a chance.

But let’s be clear.

Nobody is replacing Judge Judy.

You can continue the style. You can continue the family legacy. You might even create another great courtroom show.

But Judge Judy was one of one.

The End of an Era

It’s strange watching someone who has been on television for most of my life finally decide it’s time to step away.

But after 30 years, she has earned it.

I’ll probably still be watching those old episodes years from now, listening to Judge Judy tell somebody that their story doesn’t make sense.

And somehow, I still won’t get tired of it lol

Every year, September 11 brings back emotions that are hard to explain.

For me, 9/11 has always been one of those days that I sometimes try not to think about too much. Not because I do not respect what happened, but because it is a lot to take in. The videos. The stories. The pictures. The firefighters running into danger while others were running away. The innocent people who simply went to work that morning and never came home.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001.

A few weeks ago, I heard that Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services would be holding a 9/11 remembrance ceremony. I had been to ceremonies before, but it had been a while. I made up my mind that I was going.

Then this morning happened.

I got dressed in my uniform, dropped my son off at school, and headed to the ceremony at our new headquarters. Everything was going fine until the bottom of my right boot completely came apart lol.

Perfect timing…………not

I was walking around trying to figure out how I was going to fix it while also trying not to let anyone notice. The closer we got to the start of the ceremony, the more I thought about just leaving.

I even got back into my car and started it.

Then I stopped.

I told myself, this ceremony is bigger than me.

A broken boot was nothing compared with what we were there to remember.

So I got out of the car and went.

Yes, I was basically limping around trying to keep the bottom of my boot from flopping everywhere. To the few people who noticed and later sent me a text, THANK YOU. I am okay.

But once the ceremony started, none of that mattered.

You could feel the emotion.

Listening to our chiefs, commissioners, and others speak made this ceremony feel different. One statement from our chief especially stayed with me. It may sound cheesy but it hit me and made me think…

“This could have happened to any one of us”

As a Clayton County firefighter, that hit home.

The truth is, it still can happen to any one of us. We are living in some dangerous times right now.

The firefighters, police officers, and other public safety members who responded on 9/11 expected to go home. Many never did. They answered the call because that is what public safety does.

I still remember being a young child in elementary school when the attacks happened. Our class stopped what we were doing and watched the television. At that age, I did not fully understand what I was seeing.

As I got older, I understood more.

And somehow, it became even harder to watch.

But there is another part of the 9/11 story that I believe we need to remember.

Unity.

After that terrible day, people came together. Race did not matter. Background did not matter. Political differences seemed smaller. people helped people.

Today, we seem more divided than ever.

Sometimes I joke that snow and Christmas are the only things that can bring everybody together anymore. But maybe unity should not require a holiday, a storm, or a tragedy.

We need to normalize coming together again.

We can disagree and still care about each other. We can come from different backgrounds and still stand beside one another.

Full credit goes to everyone who helped organize today’s Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services ceremony. It was powerful, respectful, and something I am glad I did not allow a broken boot to make me miss.

Today reminded me why we say:

Never forget.

Not only the tragedy.

Not only the sacrifice.

But also the unity that followed.

I never thought I would be talking about a MySpace comeback in 2026, but here we are.

For people around my age, MySpace brings back memories. I’m 32 now, and when I think about MySpace, I think about middle school and high school. Back then, if you didn’t have a MySpace page, you almost felt like you weren’t one of the cool kids.

At least, that’s how I remember it.

I even still have an old photo that I used as one of my MySpace profile pictures. Looking at it now is crazy because it reminds me just how much time has passed…and well I was never really about that sort lifestyle LOL…but boy did I feel like it!

MySpace Really Was Your Space

MySpace launched in 2003 and became one of the biggest social networks in the world. News Corp bought the company in 2005 for about $580 million, and by 2007, MySpace was the leading social network with nearly 100 million monthly users worldwide.

What made MySpace special to me was freedom.

You could change your background, add music, customize colors, move things around and basically turn your profile into your own little website.

It was your space.

I loved the music feature. Visiting someone’s page and hearing their chosen song told you something about them before you even read their profile.

And then, of course, there was the legendary ….Top 8.

That feature probably started more school arguments than we would like to admit.

What Happened to MySpace?

Facebook eventually changed everything.

By 2008, Facebook had moved ahead of MySpace. MySpace’s U.S. traffic peaked at about 76 million monthly visitors in October 2008 before beginning a major decline. Critics pointed to slow innovation, management problems, cluttered pages and MySpace struggling to keep up with Facebook’s cleaner design and newer features.

In 2011, News Corp sold MySpace for around $35 million, just six years after paying $580 million for it.

But here’s something people forget:

MySpace never completely shut down….

It simply stopped being part of most people’s everyday lives.

MySpace Is Planning Another Comeback

Now things are getting interesting.

Current owners Tim and Chris Vanderhook, who acquired MySpace through Specific Media in 2011, recently confirmed in a new MySpace documentary that they plan to relaunch the brand.

There is currently no confirmed relaunch date, and we still don’t know exactly what the new MySpace will look like.

The question is whether people actually want it.

I have my reservations….

I think MySpace could get a huge initial rush simply from nostalgia. People my age will create accounts just to experience that feeling again.

But then what?

Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms are years ahead. Social media now includes short form video, creators, businesses, advertising, livestreaming and even AI.

That is a massive hill for MySpace to climb.

Maybe MySpace Was Ahead of Its Time

Still, there is one thing MySpace had that I believe modern social media is missing:

personality.

Today, most platforms basically tell you “Here is your profile. This is how it looks.”

MySpace said, “Here is your space. Do whatever you want with it.”

Maybe that idea was ahead of its time.

If MySpace returns with customizable profiles, music, Top 8 and that feeling of actually owning your page, I’ll probably check it out.

Will it replace Facebook or TikTok?

I seriously doubt it.

But I’ll admit something.

Seeing MySpace return would make me feel like that kid in school again, changing my profile music and wondering who had me in their Top 8.

And maybe that feeling alone is enough to get millions of us to log back in.

A couple of months ago, I wrote about President Donald Trump, tariffs, and my concerns about where the economy could be headed.

I wanted to give things time.

I was very critical of Joe Biden when he was president because I didn’t feel enough was being done about rising prices. As a voter, one of my biggest concerns was simple….get prices under control and give working people some breathing room.

Now, after giving President Trump time, I have to be fair.

I’m starting to feel the same frustration again.

This isn’t coming from a Republican or Democrat. I consider myself independent. I want whoever is sitting in the White House to succeed because when the president succeeds economically, hopefully American families succeed too.

But right now, something doesn’t feel right.

A Random Store Conversation Said A Lot

What really got me thinking happened today here in the Atlanta metro area.

I was in a store, and somehow a conversation started about how expensive everything has become. About five or six people got involved, and then others started joining us.

Different ages. Different backgrounds. Different races.

Nobody was yelling. Nobody was arguing politics.

People were simply talking about their wallets.

What surprised me was that several people said they had voted for Trump, yet they were disappointed with where the economy stands right now.

That caught my attention.

This wasn’t a political rally or some online comment section. These were regular people standing in a store talking about everyday life.

And everybody seemed to have the same question:

When are we finally going to feel some relief?

The Numbers Explain Some of That Frustration

Inflation nationally was still running at 3.4% in July, while energy prices were up 14.7% compared with a year earlier.

Here around Atlanta, food prices were up 5.5% and energy prices were up 11.5% over the year ending in June.

Even more important to working families, inflation-adjusted hourly wages were slightly lower than a year ago in July.

That’s the part politicians sometimes miss.

People don’t experience the economy through a chart.

We experience it at Kroger, Walmart, the gas pump, restaurants, rent payments, insurance bills, and everything else.

Then Came Iran

I am not going to pretend I’m a foreign policy expert. I also don’t know everything happening behind closed doors with Iran.

I have friends who serve in the military, so I take war seriously. I want them safe, and I hope every decision involving American service members has a real purpose.

But economically, the timing couldn’t have been worse.

The Iran conflict and problems around the Strait of Hormuz have helped push oil and gasoline prices higher. Average U.S. gas prices have climbed above $4 a gallon, adding another expense when families were already struggling to keep up.

That doesn’t mean America is “losing” the war. So lets not get that twisted…

It means American households are feeling another consequence of it.

The Engine Is Getting Hot

In my last article, I said the economic engine was overheating.

Well, I don’t know much about fixing engines, but we might be seeing a little smoke coming from under the hood now.

Maybe we haven’t thrown a piston …yet.

But somebody might want to grab a fire extinguisher.

There were a lot of promises about affordability, prices, energy, and making life easier for Americans. People are now waiting to see those promises show up in their bank accounts.

I still hope things improve.

Maybe six months from now, I’ll be writing a completely different article.

But as of August 2026, many working Americans aren’t asking who deserves political credit.

They’re asking a much simpler question:

Today was a long day.

I was trying to pick up my son when my 2016 Chevy Silverado decided it had other plans. As some of you may know, I drive a Silverado and let me give you some free advice…. research that year range before buying one….*sighs*

Transmission problems, repair bills, and plenty of stress. I really wish I had done more research before getting mine.

After leaving my truck at the repair shop, I ordered an Uber Comfort ride home. I normally choose Comfort because regular Uber can sometimes feel like an outdoor ride lol

Listen, when it is almost 100 degrees outside, rolling down the windows is not air conditioning. Call me bougie, but I have been on Earth for over 30 years. I enjoy cool air.

A very nice Tesla pulled up to get me. This was probably my third or fourth time riding in one, so I was already interested.

Then I noticed something.

The driver’s hands were barely touching the steering wheel on the route home.

I went from comfortable to concerned in about two seconds.

I asked, “Hey, how are you doing that?”

He laughed and explained that the Tesla was using its driver assistance system. The car was steering, changing lanes, slowing down, speeding up, and following the route.

Meanwhile, he stayed alert and watched the road.

That part is important. Tesla calls the system Full Self Driving (Supervised), but the driver is still responsible. He cannot fall asleep, play on his phone, or stop paying attention.

Still, watching it work blew my mind.

The Tesla drove me from Clayton County to my home in McDonough. We went through a good amount of traffic, and the vehicle handled the trip smoothly.

That is when I started thinking about what Uber, Lyft, and taxi drivers normally deal with all day.

They are constantly watching traffic, checking the map, choosing lanes, looking for turns, avoiding bad drivers, finding pickup spots, and trying not to miss an exit. They may spend hours driving up and down the road while also trying to keep passengers comfortable and safe.

That can be mentally exhausting.

This driver still had to watch the road, but the Tesla handled many of those small driving decisions. He seemed less like a traditional driver and more like a supervisor making sure the system stayed on track.

Ladies and gentlemen, I think Tesla and other electric vehicle companies may have broken the code for side hustles. (or perhaps full time)

Maybe I am late to the party. Maybe people have known about this hack for years. But I could not stop thinking about it.

Isn’t that the name of the game?

Find a way to make good money without wearing yourself down. Work smarter, reduce stress, and allow technology to handle some of the hardest parts.

This man bought a used Tesla, kept it clean, and used it to pick up passengers. The vehicle helped with the traffic, directions, braking, speed, and lane changes. He could focus more on the passenger experience and less on every movement of the car.

Of course, this is not exactly free money.

A driver still has a car payment, insurance, charging costs, cleaning, maintenance, taxes, and slow days. The driver must also stay awake, alert, and ready to take control.

But I still see the business opportunity.

A person could use a Tesla for Uber, Lyft, airport rides, package delivery, or a private transportation business. Dress professionally, help with bags, keep the car clean, and create a high quality experience.

The car handles more of the road. The person handles the customer.

My truck breaking down was frustrating, but that Tesla ride gave me a front row look at the future of work.

I am not saying I am buying a Tesla tomorrow.

But this ride today definitely got me thinking about some ideas…

Today, my four year old son, Miles, started pre K.

I knew this day was coming, but I did not expect it to affect me this much. Before becoming a parent, I never understood why the first day of school was such a big deal. I would see children crying, parents crying, and families standing outside the school watching their kids walk inside.

I used to wonder why everyone was so emotional.

Now I understand.

There is something strange about raising a child. One day, you are holding a little baby who depends on you for everything. Then, somehow, that baby starts walking, talking, eating, running, and developing a personality of his own.

Then suddenly, he is four years old and walking into school.

It feels like a major accomplishment. Through the sleepless nights, stressful days, sickness, tantrums, laughter, and everything else that comes with parenting, we made it to another milestone.

We made it to the first day of school.

The night before, I could not sleep very well. My mind kept moving from one thought to another. I wondered whether Miles was ready. I wondered whether I was ready.

Of course, I want my son to be successful. Every parent wants that for their child. But even more than success, I want him to be prepared for life.

When I look at Miles, I see how pure and simple his world still is. He smiles, laughs, plays, and looks at life without carrying all the worries that adults carry. Watching him reminds me to slow down and enjoy the small things.

At the same time, I know the world can be hard.

That may be the scariest part of parenting. We tell our children there are no monsters under the bed, but the truth is, there are real monsters in the world. As parents, we want to protect our children from every dangerous person, bad situation, disappointment, and painful experience.

But we cannot always be standing beside them.

This morning, I woke Miles up, helped him get dressed, and took him to school. Every step felt more emotional than I expected. When it was time to leave him, part of me wanted to stay.

In my mind, I thought, “I just want to see you again.”

That may sound dramatic to some people, but parents understand. Dropping your child off with people you do not know can bring real fear and anxiety. You hope the teachers will care for your child. You hope the school will keep him safe. Most of all, you hope he comes home smiling.

Miles was not the only child having a hard time. Other children cried. Some parents cried while watching their children go inside.

That made me realize something important: parents have every right to be emotional.

Our children are attached to us because we are their safe place. That is a blessing. But as they grow, we also have to give them room to explore, learn, make friends, and solve small problems on their own.

Letting go does not mean we stop protecting them. It means we trust that the love, lessons, and guidance we have given them will travel with them.

Today was Miles’ first day of school.

It was exciting. It was emotional. It was scary.

Now, I wait for him to come home and tell me about his day. I know he will be okay, but I also know I will always worry. That is part of being a parent.

Today, Miles took a big step forward.

And somehow, so did I.

Could I Really Retire on a Cruise Ship? https://varnervibes.com/could-i-really-retire-on-a-cruise-ship/ https://varnervibes.com/could-i-really-retire-on-a-cruise-ship/#respond Sun, 02 Aug 2026 00:06:24 +0000 https://varnervibes.com/?p=1751 I recently read about a retired couple who booked 51 cruises back to back because they believed it was cheaper than living in a retirement home. I recently read about a retired couple who booked 51 cruises back to back because they believed it was cheaper than living in a retirement home. I had heard of people living on cruise ships before, but I never gave it much thought.

After reading more about it, I have to admit that the idea sounds pretty cool.

I am not saying I would sell everything tomorrow and move onto a ship forever. Still, when I retire, I could see myself trying it for three to six months. That would give me enough time to decide if the lifestyle is truly enjoyable or if it only sounds good on paper.

Why Living on a Cruise Sounds Appealing

One of the biggest benefits is that many of your daily needs are included. Your room is cleaned, meals are prepared, and entertainment is available almost every day. You do not have to worry about cutting grass, fixing a broken water heater, cooking every meal, or cleaning a large house.

You also get to travel.

Instead of staying in one place during retirement, you could wake up in different cities and countries. One week, you may be visiting a beach. The next week, you could be exploring a historic town or trying food you have never tasted before.

Cruise ships also offer shows, pools, gyms, games, dancing, and other activities. It could be a great way to stay active and meet new people.

The Possible Money Savings

Living on a cruise ship may also save money in some cases. A cruise fare can cover your room, food, basic entertainment, and housekeeping.

At home, you may have a mortgage, rent, insurance, power bills, water bills, repairs, groceries, and other costs. Those bills can add up fast.

However, living on a cruise is not always cheap. The price depends on the cruise line, room type, destination, and time of year. Internet, drinks, tips, medical care, and trips off the ship may cost extra.

You would have to compare the full cost before making a decision.

The Downsides of Cruise Ship Living

There are also some clear negatives.

Cruise ship cabins can be small. After a few months, you may start to miss having more space. You may also get tired of eating cruise food or following the ship’s schedule.

Being away from family could become hard, especially during birthdays, holidays, or emergencies. Medical care is another concern. Cruise ships have medical centers, but they are not the same as a hospital or nursing home.

Bad weather, seasickness, crowded ships, and delayed travel plans could also become frustrating.

Why I Would Still Try It

Even with the downsides, I would seriously consider living on a cruise ship for part of my retirement.

I think the smartest plan would be to test it first. I would book several cruises back to back for three to six months. That would give me time to learn what full-time cruise life is really like.

I could see how much money I spend, how I handle the smaller space, and whether I miss being home. I could also decide if the excitement of traveling stays strong after several months.

Living on a cruise ship may not be for everyone, but retirement should be about enjoying life. After years of working, raising a family, and handling daily responsibilities, the idea of waking up near the ocean does not sound bad at all.

I may not want to live on a cruise forever, but I would definitely be willing to give it a try.
