I never thought I would be talking about a MySpace comeback in 2026, but here we are.
For people around my age, MySpace brings back memories. I’m 32 now, and when I think about MySpace, I think about middle school and high school. Back then, if you didn’t have a MySpace page, you almost felt like you weren’t one of the cool kids.
At least, that’s how I remember it.
I even still have an old photo that I used as one of my MySpace profile pictures. Looking at it now is crazy because it reminds me just how much time has passed…and well I was never really about that sort lifestyle LOL…but boy did I feel like it!
MySpace Really Was Your Space
MySpace launched in 2003 and became one of the biggest social networks in the world. News Corp bought the company in 2005 for about $580 million, and by 2007, MySpace was the leading social network with nearly 100 million monthly users worldwide.
What made MySpace special to me was freedom.
You could change your background, add music, customize colors, move things around and basically turn your profile into your own little website.
It was your space.
I loved the music feature. Visiting someone’s page and hearing their chosen song told you something about them before you even read their profile.
And then, of course, there was the legendary ….Top 8.
That feature probably started more school arguments than we would like to admit.
What Happened to MySpace?
Facebook eventually changed everything.
By 2008, Facebook had moved ahead of MySpace. MySpace’s U.S. traffic peaked at about 76 million monthly visitors in October 2008 before beginning a major decline. Critics pointed to slow innovation, management problems, cluttered pages and MySpace struggling to keep up with Facebook’s cleaner design and newer features.
In 2011, News Corp sold MySpace for around $35 million, just six years after paying $580 million for it.
But here’s something people forget:
MySpace never completely shut down….
It simply stopped being part of most people’s everyday lives.
MySpace Is Planning Another Comeback
Now things are getting interesting.
Current owners Tim and Chris Vanderhook, who acquired MySpace through Specific Media in 2011, recently confirmed in a new MySpace documentary that they plan to relaunch the brand.
There is currently no confirmed relaunch date, and we still don’t know exactly what the new MySpace will look like.
The question is whether people actually want it.
I have my reservations….
I think MySpace could get a huge initial rush simply from nostalgia. People my age will create accounts just to experience that feeling again.
But then what?
Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms are years ahead. Social media now includes short form video, creators, businesses, advertising, livestreaming and even AI.
That is a massive hill for MySpace to climb.
Maybe MySpace Was Ahead of Its Time
Still, there is one thing MySpace had that I believe modern social media is missing:
personality.
Today, most platforms basically tell you “Here is your profile. This is how it looks.”
MySpace said, “Here is your space. Do whatever you want with it.”
Maybe that idea was ahead of its time.
If MySpace returns with customizable profiles, music, Top 8 and that feeling of actually owning your page, I’ll probably check it out.
Will it replace Facebook or TikTok?
I seriously doubt it.
But I’ll admit something.
Seeing MySpace return would make me feel like that kid in school again, changing my profile music and wondering who had me in their Top 8.
And maybe that feeling alone is enough to get millions of us to log back in.
